Fishery Kit

Florida · Tarpon

Florida supports both resident tarpon and one of the most distinctive seasonal coastal migrations in the United States. The fishery ranges from winter resident and juvenile fish in South Florida through the spring Keys and southwest Florida migration, then north through Boca Grande, Homosassa and the Nature Coast, with summer migratory fish extending into northwest Florida from Apalachicola and St. George Island through Cape San Blas, Port St. Joe and Panama City Beach.

Season
JanFebMarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNovDec
Year-round somewhere in Florida. WINTER: South Florida, Everglades and Keys resident/juvenile fish. SPRING: migration strengthens through the Keys and southwest Florida. LATE SPRING–SUMMER: Boca Grande, Homosassa and Nature Coast become major adult-tarpon fisheries. SUMMER: migratory fish extend through the Big Bend and northwest Florida Panhandle, including Apalachicola, Cape San Blas, Port St. Joe and Panama City Beach. FALL: resident and bait-oriented opportunities remain, with geography increasingly influenced by cooling water.
Seasonal EnvironmentSpring: migrating adults. Summer: adults around passes/channels and broad coastal distribution. Fall: resident/bait-oriented fish. Winter: focus warmer South Florida refuges and juveniles/residents.
Water & weatherLocation and season must be considered together. Clear-water Keys flats, Boca Grande Pass, Homosassa Gulf flats, Everglades backcountry and Panhandle beach sight-fishing require different presentations, fly profiles, lines and boat positioning.
